Wearable biomechanical technology that helps understand ergonomic risks and reduce manual-handling injuries proactively.

MOVA technology

MOVA is an advanced wearable biomechanical technology designed to help organizations understand, assess, and reduce ergonomic risks in the workplace. The system uses nine lightweight sensor devices—one attached to the torso, sensors on the upper and lower arms (left and right), and sensors on the thighs and knees (left and right)—to accurately capture body movements. Working alongside a dedicated mobile app, the sensors transmit data wirelessly via Bluetooth through the torso sensor, enabling real-time analysis of posture and movement. This technology supports manual handling risk assessments, risk mitigation, and practical training to promote safer and more efficient working practices.

Powering the device On/Off

To turn on the sensor devices, press and hold the power switch for 3 seconds. The green LED will light up, indicating that the device is powered on. To turn off the device, press and hold the power switch again for 3 seconds.

Fitting the sensors correctly

Attach the sensors

The MOVA sensors are supplied with elasticated Velcro straps and a chest harness, allowing them to be securely and comfortably worn over most types of clothing.

Each MOVA system consists of nine dedicated, colour-coded sensors that are uniquely paired to work together as a single set. Sensors from different MOVA systems must not be mixed or interchanged.

Sensor Placement by Number

Each sensor is numbered and corresponds to a specific part of the body:

  • Sensor 1 – Right upper arm

  • Sensor 2 – Right lower arm

  • Sensor 3 – Left upper arm

  • Sensor 4 – Left lower arm

  • Sensor 5 – Chest / torso

  • Sensor 6 – Right upper leg

  • Sensor 7 – Right lower leg

  • Sensor 8 – Left upper leg

  • Sensor 9 – Left lower leg

Best Practice for Placement

Torso sensor (Sensor 5):
Wear this using the chest harness so that the module sits just above the centre of your chest, near the diaphragm area.

Arm and leg sensors:
Attach these using the elasticated Velcro® straps. Position the sensor on:

  • The biceps for upper arms

  • The forearm for lower arms

  • The thigh for upper legs

  • The lower leg between the knee and ankle

When standing in a natural, upright position, the sensors should face slightly forward or slightly to the side. The ideal position is between front-facing and side-facing.

Avoid positioning the sensors so they point backwards, as this may reduce tracking accuracy and affect data transmission.

Correct placement of the sensors will ensure the best performance and most accurate results from your MOVA system.

Using MOVA to conduct manual handling Risk Assessment

This section shows how to conduct an HSE MAC manual-handling risk assessment using MOVA technology in six simple steps:,

Step 1: Start the Assessment

Open the MOVA app, select “Risk Assessment”, and choose the type of assessment you want to conduct.

Step 2: Connect to Your Device

Scan and connect to your MOVA device.

Make sure all sensor units are turned ON and attached correctly.

You can optionally check sensor connectivity by selecting “Check Connectivity.” Please refer to the relevant videos for more guidance.

Step 3: Enter Task Details

Add information about the Task, Individual, Load, and Environment.

Use the comments box to include as much additional detail as possible.

Step 4: Calibrate the Sensors

Press the “Start” button to begin calibration.

You will be guided to adopt a few poses—follow the instructions carefully, as accurate calibration is essential for reliable results.

Step 5: Perform the Task

Carry out the task while the app tracks risk factors in real time.

Please note that during a risk assessment, the mobile device running the MOVA MMH app must be kept in close proximity to the person wearing the sensors to ensure reliable data collection and operation. Ideally, the mobile device should be carried by the wearer, for example in a pocket.

Step 6: Complete the Assessment

Carry out the task while the app tracks risk factors in real time.

Press the “Stop” button once the task is finished.

You will be able to view continuous posture-related risks recorded by MOVA and will be guided to complete information on additional risk factors.

Once complete, your Risk Assessment report will be generated automatically.

Checking Connectivity
(Optional)

The “Check Connectivity” feature allows you to verify that the MOVA app is receiving data from all sensor units.
To use this feature, first scan and connect to your MOVA device. Then select “Check Connectivity” and press the “Start” button.
Gently move the torso, arms, and legs where the sensors are attached. When a sensor detects movement, the corresponding body part in the app will change from red to green.

If any part remains red, make sure the sensor is turned ON and has sufficient charge.

Charging the device

To charge the sensors, use the provided charging cable and connect it to the USB-C port. The amber LED will illuminate while the device is charging and will turn off once it is fully charged.

NOTE

When the sensor is turned on by pressing the power button, the LED colour indicates the battery level. It is recommended to recharge the sensor when the LED shows amber or red.

Troubleshooting

1. Logging In Issues

  • Check internet: Ensure you are connected to the internet.

  • Restart App: If the error persists, restart the app.

  • Forgot Password: Reset your password using the "Forgot Password" link.

3. Good Calibration is mandatory

  • Follow the calibration steps in the app:

  • Stand upright and still for a few seconds when prompted.

  • Adapt an A-pose, Turn left or right as instructed and remain still until prompted.

  • Follow the prompts in the App UI and also the voice prompts during calibration

5. Recalibrating while using the device

  • The device can move with movements throughout the day. It can become more sensitive or less sensitive as a result. If that happens, please re-calibrate. To recalibrate,

  • End the current session.

  • Select "Reset" in Calibration settings and restart the session.

  • Alternatively, close and restart the app.

2. 'Device not connectable’ error

  • Wait a few seconds before pressing the "Start" button again.

  • Re-scan and reconnect to the device on the previous page.

  • Ensure the device is powered on.

  • Restart the app if the issue persists.

4. Bluetooth connection issues

  • Keep the mobile device within range of the MOVA device.

  • If the connection drops, the app will attempt to reconnect automatically.

  • For prolonged disconnections, the session will stop with an error message, and you will need to:

  • Bring the device back into range.

  • Press "Start" to resume the session.

6. Internet Connectivity

  • While the app and device can function offline, internet connectivity is recommended for:

  • Synchronizing and viewing data smoothly.

  • Logging in and initial authentication (mandatory).

If the issue persists, please email us at info@spatialcortex.co.uk
