SpatialCortex featured in Startups magazine and Connected Places Catapult


Two recent features have put SpatialCortex’s work in freight, ports, and logistics in front of a wider audience. Startups Magazine and Connected Places Catapult both covered how wearable sensor technology is being used to assess and reduce musculoskeletal disorder risk for operatives doing manual handling work.

SpatialCortex wearable sensors and AI analytics for workplace safety

SpatialCortex is a UK technology company focused on one of the most underaddressed risks in heavy industry: musculoskeletal disorders caused by manual handling, which account for seven million lost working days a year in Great Britain.


Our MOVA system uses wearable sensors worn on the arms, chest, and legs to capture how operatives move when lifting and handling loads. Rather than relying on a single observation, it builds an accurate picture of biomechanical risk across a working shift — including how loading patterns change as fatigue sets in. The output is a dashboard that gives both operatives and employers data they can act on: informing training, identifying technique drift, and shaping safer systems of work.


The partnerships behind the work

The technology has been trialled with Portsmouth International Port, Port of Tyne, and DHL, partners who engaged seriously with the assessment process, challenged the methodology, and helped stress-test MOVA in real operational conditions. That scrutiny is what moved the system from pilots to commercial readiness.

Connected Places Catapult played a central role in that journey, through funding, sector access, and a network that connected us with the right organisations at the right time. The Maritime Accelerator engagement in 2024-2025, which led to a trial with Serco, was an early demonstration of what that kind of supported deployment makes possible.
